About the Young Marines
The Young Marines is a national non-profit 501(c)(3) youth education and service program for boys and girls, ages eight through high school graduation. Our mission is to strengthen the lives of America’s youth by promoting the mental, moral, and physical development of young people.
The program emphasizes character building, leadership, and a commitment to living a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Young Marines learn the value of discipline, service to others, and teamwork through hands-on activities, community service, and leadership training.
Our Mission
To positively impact America’s future by nurturing responsible citizens who embody leadership, integrity, and a commitment to community.
What We Teach

- Leadership and self-discipline
- Live healthy and drug-free
- Teamwork and accountability
- Respect for veterans and civic responsibility
- Physical fitness and healthy living
The program encourages academic achievement, confidence, and the courage to make the right choices in difficult situations.
A History of Service
The Young Marines was founded in 1959 in Waterbury, Connecticut, by a group of Marine Corps veterans who wanted to share the values of honor, courage, and commitment with the next generation. What began as a single unit has grown into a nationwide movement.
Today, the Young Marines includes more than 5,000 youth and 2,000 adult volunteers in over 200 units across 40 states and overseas.
Recognized for Excellence
The Young Marines has received national recognition for its role in drug demand reduction and youth development. The program has earned the Fulcrum Shield Award from the Department of Defense multiple times for its excellence in youth anti-drug programs. This ongoing recognition reflects our commitment to building strong, drug-free communities.
National Leadership and Support
The Young Marines is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and operated by a dedicated national staff. Thousands of adult volunteers across the country support local units, mentoring and training youth in their communities.
Young Marine of the Year
Each year, one exceptional youth is chosen as the National Young Marine of the Year. This individual represents the best of the program’s values and serves as a national ambassador, speaking on behalf of youth, veterans, and the mission of the Young Marines. Division-level Young Marines of the Year are also recognized for their leadership and service.
