Drug Prevention and Resistance Education

Since 1993, the Young Marines have worked to raise awareness about substance abuse and misuse. Our Drug Demand Reduction (DDR) program educates youth on the dangers of drug use and misuse, providing the tools and knowledge they need to make informed, healthy decisions.

What Is Drug Demand Reduction

Created by the Department of Defense, the DDR program helps prevent illegal drug use and prescription misuse among service members, families, and communities through education, outreach, and awareness. The Young Marines proudly support this mission, striving to build drug-free communities nationwide.

Young Marines Are Committed to Red Ribbon Week

A National Awareness Program

Launched in 1985 by the National Family Partnership, Red Ribbon Week is America’s longest-running drug prevention campaign. It began after DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena was killed while investigating drug traffickers in Mexico. Today, millions honor his legacy by wearing red ribbons and pledging to live drug-free lives.

Celebrate Red Ribbon Week

Each October, Young Marines units nationwide host and join events promoting drug prevention and awareness. The DDR Dash 5K commemorates Camarena’s sacrifice and celebrates those in law enforcement who protect communities from harmful drugs. Units run locally on the third Saturday in October, joining thousands across the country in this growing annual tradition.

Red Cord

Made in the USA, Red Cord bracelets are hand-woven by Young Marines from red 550 paracord and worn as a sign of drug-free living. Units may sell bracelets locally or teach others how to make their own to spread awareness.
