Welcome to the Young Marines
Manassas

We are the Manassas Young Marines, located in Manassas, VA and are proud to be a part of our nation’s premiere, award-winning program for boys and girls between the ages of eight and eighteen. The Young Marines strengthens the lives of America's youth by teaching the importance of self-confidence, academic achievement, honoring our veterans, good citizenship, community service, and living a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral and physical development of its members. The program focuses on character building and leadership and promotes a lifestyle that is conducive to being productive members of society. The Young Marines is the premier youth organization in its Drug Demand Reduction efforts.

The Young Marines is open to all youth ages 8 through the completion of high school. The only membership requirement is that the youth must be in good standing at school. Since the Young Marines' humble beginnings, in 1959, with one unit and handful of boys, the organization has grown respectively with units throughout the country and overseas.

FEES:
The first-time fee for Manassas Young Marines is $375 with an initial deposit of a $100 non-refundable fee due on the first day of training.  The deposit is applied against the $375 fee. This fee includes insurance, utility uniform comprised of blouse, trousers, red national t-shirt, black unit/PFT t-shirt, belt, cover, boot bands, socks, boots, ribbons, name tape, Young Marines name tape, Young Marines shoulder patch, unit rocker; PFT uniform of PFT shorts, PFT sweatpants, PFT sweatshirt, and instructional materials.

The annual re-registration fee for our Unit is $55.00 which is payable September of each year.

RECRUIT TRAINING:
Recruits will go through a training program that is approximately 3-6 months long.  They must complete 26 hours of basic instruction in order to graduate from recruit training.  Upon completion of Recruit training, we hold a graduation ceremony at which time the Recruits put on their uniform for the very first time.

The philosophy of "being brilliant at the basics" helps forge our approach to leadership, which explains why our Recruit Training is usually around 6 months but could be shorter.  We take the time to ensure that the Young Marines are not just exposed to something one time, we work to reinforce each lesson and then review it at a later time to ensure that as they progress the continue having the knowledge of the Young Marines that are of a lower rank than they.

DRILLS:
Manassas Young Marines normally drill on the FIRST and THIRD Sunday of every month from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the American Legion, Post 10 at 9950 Cockrell Road, Manassas, VA.  We also attempt to have one other special event scheduled to incorporate DDR, Citizenship, volunteering to ensure that the Young Marines are becoming well rounded young men and women.

We normally dedicate at least one hour per Drill toward DDR, as that is our Core mission.  The Young Marines will also be tasked with instructing courses, under the leadership of the senior Young Marines.  This will teach the fundamentals of proper instruction, while simultaneously teaching all of the YMs organizational skills and public speaking.

The Adult Volunteers (AV) are fully involved with the betterment of the Young Marines, but this is a peer-to-peer program, and we do stress that each Young Marine must earn the next promotion by demonstrating proficiency in their craft.

ADVANCEMENT:
Participating in Drills alone will not meet the requirements, nor is it intended as the sole source of advancement requirements for the Young Marine.  Our expectation is that the Young Marines will be putting forth effort at home in learning the material and coming to drill prepared to obtain signoffs.  All of the material is at their fingertips, they just have to put down Fortnite or whatever occupying item and open the book.

Once a Young Marine has obtained all of the signatures, then we will solicit the readiness information from school and home, as the manuals direct.  Once all is received and is favorable, we will conduct a promotion board that is not intended to validate the signatures, rather it is to gauge the maturity and readiness of the Young Marine to advance to the next rank.  We do take into consideration and understand that children will be nervous and may have trouble fully articulating their thoughts, so we will encourage them throughout the process.

The commitment of both the Young Marines and Young Marines Parents is required for this program, if the Young Marine is to be successful.  We are also always in the need for Adult Volunteers to support the program.
